“Workers Compensation” refers to a range of schemes which have been maintained in the various states and territories of the Commonwealth of Australia, for over a century. The purpose of each workers compensation scheme is to ensure that anybody injured or suffering from a disease contracted at, or while traveling to or from their workplace, can be compensated for that injury or disease.
Under the workers compensation system, workers who have suffered workplace-related injury or disease can receive:
- weekly payments to cover loss of earning capacity, whether you are unable to work at all or if you have returned to work but because of your injury or disease you had to take a job paying less than before your injury or disease;
- payment of medical expenses; and
- vocational rehabilitation expenses, where necessary, to help you in your return to work.
- lump sums if you suffer permanent impairment or injury
