Motor vehicle accidents and the NSW Lifetime Care and Support Scheme

Motor vehicle accidents are more common than you think. With around 12,000 serious injuries in NSW per year involving motor vehicles, there is a push for motorists and pedestrians to be prepared and know their rights more than ever. Thankfully, there is a system that protects and cares for those who’ve become injured in motor vehicle accidents, called the NSW Lifetime Care Support Scheme. Here’s how a Taylor and Scott Motor Vehicle Accident Lawyers can get you the compensation you deserve.

How to get covered for your motor vehicle injuries

At Taylor and Scott, our expert motor vehicle accident lawyers support you in getting the best compensation possible. They can help determine if you are eligible for the Scheme, enabling you to recover quickly and find your independence again, or whether you’ll be better off taking out a Motor Vehicle Accident Compensation Claim. It’s important to get expert advice soon after the incident occurs so you know your options early and your lawyer has time to chase up evidence that can be used to support your case.

There is a system which compensates eligible people who’ve been injured in a motor vehicle accident. The NSW Lifetime Care and Support Scheme pays for rehabilitation, treatment and care of people who’ve experienced serious injury due to motor vehicle accidents. This scheme is funded by green slips, otherwise known as Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTP) insurance, which is run by icare Lifetime Care. Because it is a no-fault scheme, icare provides support to parties equally, regardless of who was a fault in the accident.

What the Scheme cover

Here’s what you can expect is you are eligible for the NSW Lifetime Care and Support Scheme.

According to icare, services include:

● Medical treatment including pharmaceuticals
● Dental treatment
● Rehabilitation
● Ambulance transportation
● Attendant care and respite services
● Domestic assistance
● Aids and appliances
● Prostheses
● Educational and vocational training
● Home, vehicle and workplace modifications.

There are 4 categories in which motor vehicle injuries are assessed:
● Brain injuries and burns
● Spinal cord injuries
● Amputations
● Permanent blindness.

What happens when you join the Lifetime Care Scheme

At Taylor and Scott, our expert Motor Vehicle Accident Lawyer will guide you through every step of the process and ensure that you understand all your options. This is important, especially if you find out that you do not qualify for the NSW Lifetime Care Scheme, you’ll need to escalate your case with the help of your lawyer.

If you’re eligible and accepted into the Scheme, you’ll be labelled an interim participant, and will receive support for two years. You’ll be paired with a team who will convene with you to determine what type of care you’ll need to be able to be independent and participate in your community. Your case manager will then work with you to help choose the appropriate people who can provide the services you require. After the two-year interim participation period, you can apply to become a lifetime participant.

Once you’re a lifetime participant, icare will continue paying for your treatment, rehabilitation and care services which are ‘reasonable and necessary’ in relation to your motor vehicle injuries.
